Mrs. Alda Adean “Dean” Cox Schaeffer, 84, of Frederick, died early Saturday afternoon, Dec. 12, 2009, at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick. She was the wife of the late George Worthington Schaeffer Jr., who she married in 1945 and who preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1999.
Born Apri1 25, 1925, in Ceres, Va., she was a daughter of the late Walter William and Mary Jane Harner Cox.
Dean was an avid participator and volunteer. While her husband was president of the Montgomery County Fair from 1973 to 1975, Dean chaired the Coca-Cola refreshment booths for years. She enjoyed the friendship of working with friends and supporting her husband, George, in his endeavors. She also was a routine volunteer at the Ag Center when help was needed to prepare or serve a dinner.
Dean was a volunteer cafeteria worker at Germantown Elementary School while Becky and Betty Lou attended. In addition, she was an avid PTA volunteer. She was a great cook and enjoyed entertaining at the holidays.
She was an active participant in the Brown Swiss Association. She and George traveled throughout the U.S. to attend annual National Brown Swiss Association meetings. George and Dean were the consummate friends. They loved to entertain their friends with dinner out and at their home in Clarksburg for years.
For the past 10 years, Dean has resided at the Homewood at Crumland Farms Retirement Home in Frederick. She enjoyed all the activities and became a loved resident on the Willows Wing. She enjoyed the daily card games and learned to swim at Homewood.
George and Dean were known throughout Montgomery and Frederick counties for the lunches out. Whenever they went into local restaurants they were known by name and were usually accompanied by their grandchild.
They loved to travel locally and often just drove around Frederick County visiting farms and enjoying scenery.
Surviving are her children, Rebecca Lear of Walkersville, Betty Lou Chadwell and husband, Jack, of Mount Airy, George Barry Schaeffer of Middletown; five grandchildren, Jonathan “Brett” Chadwell of Frederick, and Geoffrey, Stephen, Phillip and Caroline Schaeffer, all of Middletown; as well as siblings, Leona Calloway of Woodsboro, Elouise Debo of Florida, and Amy Jean Cook of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews.
