Mrs. Agnes Virginia Schaeffer Watkins, 90, formerly of Cedar Grove, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2009, at Montgomery General Hospital, shortly after admittance. She was a resident of Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, in Sandy Spring, from January 1999 until the time of her death. Agnes was the wife of the late Royce Talmage Watkins who passed away March 1, 1972.
Born March 10, 1919, in Ladiesburg, she was a daughter of the late George Worthington Sr., and Alice Loretta Valentine Schaeffer. Agnes was the last member of her family to survive.
She was a life member of the Upper Seneca Baptist Church of Cedar Grove, and was active in church activities. Agnes and her husband adored children, and in their earlier years were foster parents to many underprivileged children, while living on the family farm on Watkins Road in Cedar Grove. Her dog, “Butch,” was her constant companion after the death of her husband.
Agnes enjoyed gardening and word-search puzzles.
Surviving her are two daughters, Mary Jo Huntt and husband, Robert, of Germantown and Jane Watkins Gartner of Damascus; two grandsons, John Talmage Mayer and his wife, Julie, of Taneytown, and David Wayne Gartner and his wife, Lilliana, of Damascus; three great-grandchildren, Ashley Renee Mayer, Sean Talmage Mayer, and Samantha Jane Gartner; and a sister-in-law, Dean Schaeffer of Frederick.
Agnes was preceded in death by sisters, Katherine Irene Main, Frances Loretta Haines; and brother George Worthington Schaeffer Jr.
