29 Apr McCaffrey, Audrey
SEPTEMBER 30, 1931 – MARCH 11, 2021
On Thursday March 11th, after spending time with her family, Audrey McCaffrey passed peacefully in her home as sunlight kissed her face and a gentle breeze filtered through her bedroom window.
Audrey loved bright days and the water. As a young girl, many of her fondest childhood memories were of her time spent at the pool. She was an accomplished swimmer and enjoyed the spirit of competition. Later in life, she could often be found riding the waves at Bethany Beach on a surf mat during summer vacations with her entire family.
Audrey loved her family. She was a native Washingtonian and the youngest of four. As her older brothers and sisters married, they remained in close proximity to their childhood home allowing Audrey to grow up in a village of love. At the age of 15, she met the love of her life Eddie at a local carnival. Together they raised two daughters Kathy and Audrey, who continued the legacy through their grandchildren Robert, Andrew and Matthew, their great granddaughter Amy, and their entire extended family. For many years, their home was the gathering place for holidays, birthdays and celebrations. When Audrey set a table, no meal was ever complete without a jar of Hellman’s mayonnaise.
Audrey loved to have fun. She enjoyed puzzles, cards and mahjong. Games were a huge part of her life because of the time spent with her family and friends, and the connections they fostered. Audrey loved to be social and was a member of many groups ranging from ceramics and Bible study with her FROGS (Forever Relying on God) to bowling leagues and square dancing. Her quiet hobbies included: crafts, knitting, crocheting, quilting and sewing. She was also a collector of nativity sets and beanie babies.
Audrey loved to give. Along with her sister, she hosted and prepared countless church dinners and wedding receptions at both Glenmont Methodist and Oakdale Emory. She was also a Brownie and Girl Scout leader for her daughters, and a lifetime member of the Montgomery County Agricultural Fair as a dedicated volunteer. She combined her community service and talents by making unique newborn baby hats for the Montgomery General Hospital.
Audrey and Eddie were married on St. Patrick’s Day 69 years ago, and she will be laid to rest on their 70th wedding anniversary. Per her request, her grave marker will read: “A wonderful life.”
Proceeded in death by her devoted husband Edward McCaffrey. Survived by her adoring daughters Kathy Hildebrandt (John), Audrey Frace (Gary), loving grandsons Robert Hildebrandt (Anna), Andrew Frace, Matthew Frace (Caitlin), baby great granddaughter Amy, and a wonderful array of nieces and nephews.
