Mrs.Ruth Stickle

Ruth Breuninger Stickle, 84, a life-long Washington-area resident who helped restore historic Needwood Farm in Derwood, Md., and who was was active in church and civic groups, died Tuesday at her home at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg. She had a heart ailment.

 

Mrs. Stickle, a member of the Montgomery County Historical Society, researched the original 17th century land grant for Needwood Farm and its grounds of more than 300 acres. She and her husband, Wilmer F. Stickle, a former president of the Montgomery County Farm Bureau, bought the property in 1948 and restored it. Sometime after they sold it, the farm become part of the Montgomery County park system. Mr. Stickle died in 1965.

 

A native Washingtonian, Mrs. Stickle graduated from Swarthmore College in 1919. She was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church in Gaithersburg and was active in church charities. She also was a member of the Tench Tillman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Gaithersburg Garden Club, the Rock Creek Women's Republican Club and the Washington Host Lions Club Women's Auxiliary. She was a former member of the Women's Board of George Washington University Hospital.

 

Survivors include three daughters, Virginia S. Roach of Darnestown, Md., Ruth S. Bernard of Towson, and Robin S. Vierbuchen of Bethesda; two sister, Esther Janney of Phoenix, Ariz., and Robin Lukens of Rydal, Pa.; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A son, W.F. Stickle Jr., died in 1976.
