Mr. Roger W. Spates, 53, of 16411 Comus Road, Dickerson, died Tuesday, May 12, at his residence. 

Born Dec. 25, 1938, in Olney, he was a son of John R. and Jeannette Spates.

Mr. Spates was a member of the Hyattstown Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years. 

Surviving, in addition to his parents, are two sisters, Janet Hagan and Geri Smith; one brother-in-law, Jacob L. Smith Sr.; one niece, Kelli Hagan Taylor; and two nephews, Scott Hagan and Jacob L. Smith Jr.
