Savage, Mary

Mary was an active volunteer in Fair and Off-Season Foods.  

Mary Elizabeth Savage, 92 of Knoxville Maryland passed away peacefully on Friday, December 21, 2012. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. 

Born February 26, 1920 at Broad Run, Maryland she was the daughter of the late Edgar E. Poffinberger, Sr. and Bertha Brown Poffinberger. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years Melvin (Dick) Savage in 2000.

Mary spent her childhood years in Frederick County, living in Broad Run. She married Melvin in 1949 and moved to the family farm in Boyds, Maryland where they operated Savage-leigh Farm. In partnership with Melvin’s brothers and later their sons, they raised registered Holsteins and crop farmed. Following their retirement they relocated to Knoxville, Md. where Mary resided until recently when she became a resident of Homewood at Crumland Farm, Frederick, MD.

She is survived by their three children, Wayne and wife Cindee of Knoxville, Diane and husband Dale of Gaithersburg, and Denny and wife Mandy of Keymar. Mary is also survived by eight grandchildren- Amy Savage of Mt. Joy, PA, Chip Savage and wife lsha of Libertytown, Kristi Rogers of Knoxville, Jenny Savage of Germantown, Kelli Welsh and husband Matt of Knoxville, Jami Hartman and husband Jamie of St.Thomas, PA, Eric Geary and wife Starr of Mt. Airy, and Ryan Savage and wife Ashley of Knoxville. She was also the proud great grandmother of Colleen Geary, Matthew Rogers, Connor and Chase Savage, Colton and Kaleigh Hartman, and Kendall, Breckin, Andie and Gatlin Welsh. Also surviving are step­ grandchildren Buster Richards and wife Courtney and Marlee Whitely and fiance Matt lambert along with step great-grandchildren Mylee and Willow.

Mary was the oldest of four children and is survived by her brothers Edgar Poffinberger, Jr. and wife Gladys, Charles Poffinberger and wife Esther, and sister Betty Storks and husband Ed. She is survived by many nieces and nephews as well as sister-in-law Betty Rhinecker and husband Dave, and brother-in-law Marshall Savage and wife Doris.

Mary was a member of Faith Baptist Church, Knoxville, MD and a previous long time member of Germantown Baptist Church, Germantown, MD. She was a true farmer’s wife. She was wonderful cook, loved to sew (especially repairs to farm clothing for the family), assisted with farm errands, gardening, canning and freezing and family butcherings and served a chauffeur to all. She was an active 4-H parent and regularly hosted 4-H meetings and special activities at their home or at the farm. She was a member of the Montgomery County Agricultural Center where she helped with Ag and 4-H dinners and events and the annual county fair. Mary along with her family was honored by the Ag Center pioneers at the 2012 fair for their long time involvement in the Ag Center.
