Later they also lived in and operated a young men’s rooming house (both on Buffalo St.). Joan’s father also opened one of the first laundromats in the United States near the entrance of Cornell University where she often worked after school and on weekends. In 1987 Joan and Reed retired to Pittsboro, NC, but Joan moved back to Gaithersburg, MD a few years after her husband’s death in 1999. Joan was a homemaker by trade and an avid volunteer by nature. Through the years she served as a Girl Scout Leader, a 4-H Club Leader, a 4-H volunteer for 35 years, a Booster Club President and also volunteered with the North Carolina Amateur Sports, the Salvation Army, and her homeowners association.
